Our day at Heartwood Forest

On the 27th November we visited Heartwood Forest on one of The Woodland Trust’s tree planting days. Wellies and winter clothes at the ready we met up with some staff and students from Berkhamsted Prep School, Ralph Sadleir School, and Saint Mark’s West Essex Catholic School, and were ready to get started.

At The School Planner Company we take our environmental responsibilities very seriously, which is why we have become a part of the Woodland Carbon Capture Scheme, and events like the tree planting day really provide us with the opportunity to make a difference.

We set out with a goal, to help plant 3000 deciduous trees in the area, continuing The Woodland Trust’s mission of returning native woodland to the UK’s landscape. So after we were treated to some hot drinks and sandwiches, it was time to get digging. Tim Kirwin (wilderthings.co.uk) was our ‘expert helper’ for the day and showed us how to work safely and correctly. We had to use small-bladed shovels because the ground was so stoney, but the damp conditions made it easier to dig.

It was truly incredible to see just how many people had given their time to support the effort, and help us to reach the target of 3000 trees planted in just one day. Particularly inspiring was the work ethic of the school students who accompanied us on the day. They worked non-stop (well, there was the occasional stop for chocolates), and were a real credit to their schools.

After a well deserved lunch, we were offered the opportunity to take a walk around Heartwood Forest learning about the woodland we were helping to expand and the wildlife within, and really gaining an insight into the importance of tree planting days like this one.

We strongly believe that it is very important that we make an effort to conserve and replenish woodland in the UK and would like to sincerely thank The Woodland Trust and Woodland Carbon for allowing us to be involved in this fantastic day. We would also like to say a special thank you to the schools who joined us and were so fantastic on the day. We really hope we get the opportunity to take part in tree planting days next year too!
