New yearbook sample guide for 2011-12!

New yearbook sample guide - get your copy! Each year SPC update, revise and generally refresh the look and content of their sample guide to make it more appealing, user friendly and informative. This academic year has been no exception. With updated design options and binding styles, it has been written to support the new website. The guide includes examples of our how-to guides and demonstrates the high print quality of our yearbooks. The guide explains how we are here for you each step of the way with your yearbook project before proceeding to a neatly presented spread outlining our design options (DIY through to complete design) and then to discussing each of the design and binding options in detail so you can understand and decide exactly which package would work best for your school.

Part of our bid to increase understanding of our design packages has been the renaming of the ‘Gold Service’ to the more descriptive title ‘Complete Design Service’ and the ‘Silver Service’ to the more descriptive ‘Pre-designed Template Service’. Same as in previous years, the Complete Design Service is our fully bespoke yearbook design option where you choose the theme and the layout of your yearbook and our Pre-designed Template Service is where you choose from a range of pre-designed templates and indicate your preferred colour scheme before we add in all of your content.

SPC hope you like the new look sample guide and hope that it answers many of your questions about the yearbook process; if you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to call us on 0845 838 6161 or email yb@spc-yearbooks.co.uk.

Hints and tips to keep your yearbook in budget…

Help and tips to keep to your yearbook budget and save money and costsAlong with having a great looking yearbook, cost is also an important factor for you to think about when organising your yearbook. A great way to start with the yearbook project is to survey the students in your year group to find out what people are willing to pay – you do not want to spend time creating an elaborate yearbook with a whole page per student if students aren’t prepared to pay for it!

Once you have a price range in mind, then you can start to select the options that would be right for you.  There are four factors that affect the price you pay.  Here are just some of SPC Yearbooks’ top budget tips:

Which design option you use – There are three price levels for the design options. The lowest cost option is to design the yearbooks yourselves. We have software that we can supply you free of charge to help with this, or for you to design on your own software and supply print ready files or hard copies for us to scan.  All of our ‘DIY’ options cost the same for the base price that you pay – £7.99 per book for a minimum of 50 books.

If you would prefer our professional designers to create a yearbook for you, then there are two options.  Our ‘Pre-designed Template’ service is where you choose from a range of designs and we put your yearbook together in your chosen style and starts at £10.99 per book.  Our premium ‘Complete Design’ service is where we come up with a completely unique design for you from your design brief and starts at £13.99 per book.

How many pages in your yearbook? – You can have as many pages as you like – just add on 10p per side to the base price of your chosen design option.  The fewer pages you have in the yearbooks, the cheaper they will be.  If you are looking to save costs or have a very large year group, you could choose to have a design with a whole form group on a double page spread.  You may need to limit the pages that you include – write down all of the pages that you definitely want, and those that you would like if price allows, and see what this does to the page count and how this affects the cost.  Remember that it is 10p per side – 20p per double sided leaf.

Which binding style are you having?Softback yearbooks are very popular and come as standard in the base prices of your chosen design option, so if you are trying to keep the cost down, you may find that a softback yearbook is the right choice for you.  If you prefer to have a hardback book then there are three options to choose from – these will add between £4 and £6 to each yearbook price.

How many yearbooks will you order? – If you order between 150 and 249 yearbooks, then you will qualify for a 10% large order discount. If you order 250-299 yearbooks, this increases to 15% and if you order 300 or more then you will get a 20% large order discount.

SPC Yearbooks offer a range of design options, 6 different binding options and are completely flexible about page count so we can offer a solution to fit every budget. All proofing and delivery charges are included and there is no VAT to pay on yearbooks, so there are no hidden costs.

To help you work out prices, take a look at the useful online price calculator where you can change the options to suit your budget or call one of our advisors on 01480 410432 to talk through which options would be best for you.

Help! Which yearbook binding should I choose?

Choosing your yearbook binding (the part that holds the book together) can be tricky if you are unsure about each option and it’s benefits. In this post we are going to show you each binding type that SPC Yearbooks offer and explain the options so you can make an informed decision about which yearbook binding is best for you.

Softback yearbook binding

We have three available:

  • Softback Perfect bound – as used for our Sample Guide
  • Softback Wiro bound – metal wiro binding, similar to note pads
  • Softback Coil bound – plastic coil binding – more flexible and a little more durable than the metal wiro

On all softback cover options your yearbook design can be digitally printed on the front and back cover – so there are no restrictions on the design side of things, whether you’re creating your own or having your yearbook professionally designed. If you are on a tight yearbook budget then a softback cover is ideal – SPC Yearbooks’ softback bind cost is built into the base price so there’s nothing extra to pay.

Hardback yearbook binding

Looking for a premium yearbook bind? If so, take a look at these hardback options:

Hardback cloth cover – we have 4 colours available on this range of covers; black, blue, green and maroon. Once you’ve chosen the colour of the cover you can then decide on a foil colour which will be embossed onto the cover. We have a variety of foil colours available; gold, silver, red, green, blue and magenta. If you have a specific colour you want on your cover, please do ask and we may be able to do this too! The embossed image can be anything of your choice such as your school logo, school name, year of leaving, etc.  The hardback cloth cover generally achieves more of a traditional and sophisticated look to your yearbook which will never look outdated.

Another hardback yearbook cover that SPC offer is Faux Leather – the process and finish is very similar to the hardback cloth option, the only difference being a leather material instead of cloth. For Faux Leather covers there’s a wider range of colours and textures available. If you have a specific colour in mind please do get in touch and we will organise some samples to be sent to you to take a closer look. Similar to the hardback cloth option, the faux leather hardback binding gives your yearbook that classic and sophisticated finish which is timeless and durable.

Another option (which is a particularly popular choice with many schools) is a full colour hardback – with this cover ‘the world is your oyster’ as not only do you have the durability of a hardback yearbook cover, but you also have the flexibility to have any design on the front and back. As the cover is printed digitally, you can achieve any look you wish with this option either design it yourself or have SPC’s professional designers create something for you.

Celebrate primary years with a yearbook

Primary School yearbooksPrimary yearbooks are growing in popularity and are great for teachers, parents and pupils alike. They’re a wonderful memento to remember the community and it’s achievements, whether for the whole school or the leavers’ year. Primary yearbooks are slightly different to secondary school yearbooks as they tend to have fewer pages and generally have softback covers.

The most popular binding used for primary school yearbooks is square-backed staple binding, which offers great value for money and is very durable. Hardback yearbooks are popular too, though we feel square-back binding represents the best value for primary schools.

You can have your yearbook designed for you, or design it yourself.  Either way you can get the children involved and let them be really creative. Most yearbooks include some information about the school, a message from the head teacher, profiles for the teachers and a profile for each child. Profiles usually include a photograph and a comment written either by the child, or about the child by their teacher. You can include photographs, children’s artwork and you can scan the childrens’ comments in so they appear handwritten on the page, making it even more personal.

SPC Yearbooks offers specially designed templates for primary schools.  Request a sample pack, if you have any questions please call 01480 410432 or email us.
