Patriotic theme – using flags

Incorporate flags into your yearbook design – this could be bunting across the top of each yearbook page or across the middle to break the page up into sections.

Use flag artwork for your background – for a touchable, textured appearance use a canvas or fabric printed flag, or manipulate your flag using photo-editing software to achieve a texture effect (in Photoshop use Filters).

Add flags as decorative items to your yearbook pages. If you are an international school, why not include each students’ flag as part of their profile page or section?

Original vintage vs modern vintage yearbook themes

Yearbooks from the 1920s to the 1960s are fascinating to browse – the clothes, haircuts and general design and style of the yearbooks. If you’re looking for clean and simple vintage design inspiration, these are great to look at. Colour pages were a rare novelty back in those days, so how lucky are we to have full colour yearbooks these days? This blogger’s husband is an avid collector of old yearbooks and has a few photos of original yearbooks from the past: http://diydelray.com/2011/11/29/looking-at-the-past-through-vintage-yearbooks/

If you would prefer to use more modern vintage artwork in your yearbook, choose pastel colour backgrounds (blue, green, grey, purple, orange, pink, brown, etc.) and vintage influence patterns such as polka dots, candy stripes, stars, checks, etc.

Why not crown those victorious on your awards page? Design your own crown to incorporate into the yearbook page. Elaborate, decorative photo frames fit perfectly with any vintage yearbook theme – use frames in your montage pages and/or for each student photo on your profile pages.

Don’t forget you can add your own clipart, scrapbook items and frames to our design your own yearbook software, save images as .png so that they have a transparent background before uploading them to either Yearbook Creator or Yearbook Designer Live.

Yearbook page ideas – Celebrate school romance and couples…

Yearbook page ideas - Celebrate school romance and couplesDedicate a page or two to school romance in your yearbook. Celebrate old flames (or even the couples that never were) by putting together a yearbook page or spread with couples’ names and photos. Maybe choose some yearbook awards for couples such as ‘cutest couple’, ‘longest relationship’, ‘most unlikely couple’.

Has Cupid been unkind and left you single? Why not use a yearbook page to confess biggest crushes or the romances that should have been. These will only be revealed when the yearbook is given out – who had a secret crush on you?

Relationships are a big part of school life so record them in your yearbook for others to look back on in twenty years time. If your school organises regular reunions, see which of those couples are still together (or have got together since school), and revisit those cute yearbook snaps when they first got together. Wouldn’t it be great to present your yearbook to couples on their wedding day in the future? Or perhaps they’ll become the next hottest celebrity couple and your yearbook will prove you went to school with them!

Inappropriate yearbook content – where’s the line?

Questions about inappropriate and explicit yearbook contentWondering where to draw the line on explicit or inappropriate yearbook content? This could be in the form of photos, student comments, confessions or awards. At SPC Yearbooks we have few restrictions on what you can include in your yearbook.  However, racist comments or inappropriate comments regarding a fellow student or teacher will be refused and won’t be printed.

We see a yearbook as a positive memento of your time in education.  It is a reminder of all of the great times you have had with your friends, but imagine showing it to your family or revisiting your yearbook in years to come only to see that you were ‘Most likely to… end up on the sex offender’s register’, ‘Most likely to… end up in jail’ or ‘Most likely to… become a Porn star’.  It may seem funny now, but take our word for it – it’ll be rather embarrassing in a few years time and may tarnish those happy memories as a student.

Check that people in the photos you intend to submit are happy to be included.  Think carefully about the implications of using, for example, drunken photos or anything that could cause embarrassment to that person or hurt their feelings.

Every yearbook proof must be signed off by a teacher before it goes to production, ensuring that all content is approved.  With SPC you can be confident that security is one of our priorities.  We will highlight anything we see as inappropriate so that the yearbook advisor/teacher can moderate it.  Also remember that your yearbook represents your school.  Other families will see it’s contents – inappropriate content in your yearbook could prevent leavers’ having the opportunity to create a yearbook in the future.

Yearbook theme ideas – At the Movies style

Movie theme yearbook ideas

Movie theme yearbook page ideas

In this third edition of yearbook theme ideas, we are looking at a movie-style theme. If you’re planning to make your own yearbook or provide SPC Yearbooks with a brief to be professionally designed, then this is another perfect theme post for you. The ultimate in glamorous yearbooks – scrolling film, popcorn and a red carpet. Even if you’re designing your school yearbook yourself, you can make a really fun and unique movie theme, there’s plenty of inspiration – just visit your local cinema or movie theatre and take a look around.

You can go for a very slick, highly designed yearbook style – ask someone who is a dab hand at drawing to provide some illustrations for your yearbook page designs. Use images of film reels and put your photos inside the border to look super-authentic. ‘Walk of Fame’ style gold stars are great for yearbook awards pages – write the recipient’s name inside along with their award title. Graphics of movie tickets or clapper boards are ideal for profile pages. Go for a ultra Hollywood theme with neon lettering for page titles and a red carpet running throughout, holding your page numbers perhaps.

Ask each tutor group to come up with a favourite film which could be the theme of their profile pages, take a vote to make sure that everyone gets a say in which theme is chosen. Be careful not to break any copyright rules, just use the film’s genre as inspiration for your design i.e. a western, a sci-fi, a rom-com, etc.

If you have a bit of time put aside, recreate some famous movie stills within your year group and photograph them to include in title pages.

This theme gives you the license to mix it up and use a wealth of colours, so don’t be afraid to experiment and put your school’s stamp on a movie yearbook theme.

How should I structure my yearbook? Revisited…

Following on from our post back in October talking you through how to structure your yearbook, we’ve put together an example PDF which visually demonstrates our recommended minimum content for your yearbook – we suggest that you (at least) include the sections demonstrated in this PDF to ensure that you have a substantial yearbook, full of school memories – it should also help you to get an idea about how these sections can be ordered to achieve a fabulously flowing leaver’s book!

Download your copy by clicking here, print it out and take it to your next committee meeting.
